The Syrian rebel group Ahrar al-Sham recently released a promotional video showcasing the training of Unit 82, a supposedly highly trained special forces type unit under Ahrar al-Sham.
The unit appears to have emerged in August 2018 as part of the National Front for Liberation, and announced itself with a 10 minute YouTube video.
Attached to the most recent promotionaal video are the requirements to be met in order for a prospect to join the unit, he must:
1- Have good morals and conduct, and must carry the desire for j!h4d and the spirit of sacrifice.
2- He must be single.
3- Between 18 and 25 years old
4- Free of disabling diseases and injuries.
5- Have a good physical structure and fitness.
6- Be proficient in reading and writing.
7- To pass the interview and nomination tests designated for elite fighters.
The unit also seemingly lead the attack on a Syrian Arab Army (or allied militia) outpost in the west of the Aleppo Province in January 2023, which was geolocated by TPR.
Since the beginning of 2023, the unit has published footage of operations in the provinces of Aleppo, Latakia, and Idlib. The majority of the videos of the unit’s operations depict small scale raids, single-rocket attacks, and sniper attacks.
The group’s most recent attack occurred on May 5, 2024, with a Unit 82 Sniper alledgedly shooting and killing a pro-Regime combatant in Syria’s Latakia Province. Footage of the operation was released the following day on the unit’s Telegram channel.
One X (formerly known as Twitter) user claiming to be part of the unit posted pictures showing his weapons and kit.
The unit can be seen posing for a photo with the leader of Ahrar al-Sham, Amer al-Sheikh and his inner circle.
