A newly-circulated video on social media reportedly shows at least three foreign – reportedly Colombian – PMC contractors providing first aid to a wounded Rapid Support Forces (RSF) combatant. The video was reportedly filmed in Sudan’s North Darfur State, likely near El-Fasher, which has been under siege by the RSF since May 2024. At the start of the video, small arms fire is heard in the background, suggesting the video was taken amidst a recent battle or skirmish.

The emergence of the video adds weight to claims that foreign military contractors are fighting alongside and supporting the RSF in Sudan’s Civil War. Arabic-language social media pages, as well as national news outlets, have suggested that the men are Colombian nationals. Colombian PMC contractors are reportedly recruited through Emirati private security firms before being funnelled through Libya to join the RSF in Sudan. Whilst the identities of the men in the video have not been independently verified, their comparatively professional appearance, first-aid know-how, consistent uniform (including tactical-style boots) and use of blood-type patches are consistent with standard PMC practices – not to mention their visibly lighter complexion compared to the RSF combatants seen in the footage.

If verified, this video further underscores the RSF’s use of – and growing reliance on – foreign networks for both manpower and logistical support. The recruitment and deployment of Colombian contractors by the United Arab Emirates adds to the ways in which Abu Dhabi has supported and continues to support the RSF. Beyond PMC contractors, this support has included the provision of various types of conventional and advanced weaponry via Khalifa Haftar-controlled East Libya. These developments highlight the transnational nature of Sudan’s civil war, where external actors continue to shape the balance of military power on the ground. For the time being, the footage serves as evidence pointing to a complex proxy dimension behind the RSF’s campaign against the internationally recognised Sudanese Government and the Sudanese Armed Forces.
